Web 2.0 & New Media

Web 2.0 and New Media - BIG Business!

In the early days of the internet, most of us simply used email and surfed the web. We browsed for information and looked at pictures, but apart from email, chat rooms and forums, there were very few real opportunities for the average "web surfer" to interact with others, or to contribute anything of their own.

Because most small to medium sized businesses could hardly afford to pay the overly inflated prices being charged for a "professionally" designed website, flashy amateur "free" sites built by friends and relatives began to flood the web. These were better than not having a website at all, but with little or no traffic and all manner of uncontrollable ads cluttering their pages, the freebies left much to be desired.

Times have changed! Enter Web 2.0

In 2004, new internet technologies began to emerge that would make the world wide web much more interactive with its users. More and more people began using IM, chat rooms, forums and webcams. Internet audio and video began to surface more frequently as well.

Google started hosting uploadable user generated videos (ugv) in 2005 and a new company called YouTube was formed shortly after. Google gambled, and snatched up YouTube a year later for a cool 1.65 billion dollars, with Google's CEO Eric Schmidt stating, “This is the next step in the evolution of the Internet.”  That turned out to be a really good bet!

About that same time, the social networking giant, MySpace, began gaining enormous popularity, with one industry poll claiming MySpace had 12 billion unique page views in Oct. 2005, twice that of Google's 6.6 billion. MySpace celebrated its 100 millionth account in 2006, with its closest competitor FaceBook, taking over the #1 spot in April 2008. Oh yeah! Then there's Twitter, LinkedIn and countless others.

And the web 2.0 list goes on with podcasting, blogging and webinars. What started with internet users communicating through email, forums and chat rooms has evolved into what is now recognized as the "New Media" revolution, and web 2.0 is simply the 2-way web.

Why You Should Take Advantage of Web 2.0 and New Media

Here are just a few reasons  -

First and foremost, the internet is the most effective and affordable media solution available for promoting your business. There are virtually unlimited options for you, and many are totally free of charge. Secondly, statistics show that the internet grew at the alarming rate of 336% from the year 2000 to 2008, and it continues to gain momentum every minute. There are now over 1.5 billion internet users worldwide, and with internet video, blogs, social networking, podcasting, webinars, etc., internet users contribute an enormous amount of new and fresh content to the web every single minute of every single day. The search engines love it!

Did you know that . . .

  • 72.5% of the population in the U.S. are internet users - that's 220,141,969 people surfing the web in the U.S. alone.

  • In 2006, U.S internet users logged on for more than 129 million hours per week

  • U.S. internet users typically visit over 100 web sites per month, averaging more than 2,400 web pages each.

  • Internet users average getting online twice per day for a total of nearly 20 hours per month.

  • In China, 100 new internet users per minute come online for the very first time.
